Memory Transference Project

Memory Transference Project >SITE:1

Angeliki Avgitidou Iordanis Stylidis

Site Specific Installation/Land Art at Enaoli, Tuscany, Italia.

The ideological basis of this work lies in our intention to view art as medium of influence, critical assessment, acceptance or dismissal and in these ways an intellectual uplift of every observer or demanding visitor of this site-specific installation.

Our initial intentions was for a work that deals with nature as memory in a reality of a modern man and woman whom experience nature as a gateway, a playground or a weekend immersion separate from their daily routines. Life within nature is a childhood memory, a cherished summer with the grandparents, a traumatic displacement or the intimidating unknown. A letter was addressed to about thirty people asking them to narrate a story of their life in nature. No particular explanations were given as to the definition of nature, people were only asked to be direct and concise. This letter can be regarded as an odd and sudden question left in the street, something the wind might scatter. Some days later and in no particular ideologically ordered behaviour the answers arrived.

The fifteen answers gathered were translated in Italian nad designed to be viewed in site. They anticipate a group of people for whom it will never be proven that they approached, read, thought, or because of this work of art, would like to meet, spend hours with, discuss or even narrate their own story to the artists.

The collected stories were printed in cloth and hung by wooden poles in the field, like strange fruits of an earth that is formed in the ocean of the ideological versions of every artistic gesture. They can be gathered by the visitor, they can satisfy his hunger, they can annoy her, they can make him tell his own story, or they can –much later- in a distant land from the ones that bore and put them up, encourage them to construct their own analogy of the project. In this way the ideal visitor of the site may fill a piece of earth with the way and variations of a life lived. This ideal but simultaneously hidden artistic act, the diffusion of a life on the earth surface holds a big part in the wishes of the operators and carriers of these fifteen stories.
