The Albanian Theory

At the Albanian pavillion Armando Lulaj videotapes a block of ice melting in a gypsy inhabited wasteland. But best of all are the videos by Heldi Pema and Alban Hajdinaj. The first one carries scenes from a city shot from a moving car. They're b&w and not very clear. At times a title, sometimes followed by an arrow appears, in order to 'explain' the sign that has seized to signify anything. In the second video an Albanian scientist explains his theory using a blackboard, while discrediting his own status by putting all this in the scenery of his back yard.

Estonian Pavillion

Best thing I've seen today. A video narrates the artist's story about how he accepted a Dean of Art position in order to provide his family with a house (including a bank loan). This meant cutting down on his studio work and feeling guilty all the time. To cut a long story short, a scientist offers him a solution. His wife and childen must die!
He visualises killing them in a low-fi animation in b&w(except for the blood) with a lightness that has to do with his child-like drawings. On the other rooms strangely scaled toys play between morbid and funny.

Would you like to take a performance artist out to dinner?

A performance artist shot in genuinely glossy magazine style asks us whether we would like to take her out and leaves her e-mail. I'm reminded of the British artist who put an ad on promising to love you for a week. He got about 10 relpies and enev had his experience televised.

Bill Viola- Ocean without a Shore

The video master's work. We all want to see it. First impression: familiar routines. Whole body shots, people coming in and out of the water, ofcourse water. Fear that it will be a reitaration of the manierisms he has developed. Still there are strong emotional moments. People coming out of a water screen, the water droping against their eyes and hands like blood from a dutch painting of Christ. Then the people turn away. Nowhere to go. No despair but acceptance of reality and fate.

Li Chen -Energy of Emptiness

This is the first V.B. exhibition that I see. First thoughts are you need to know some history behind this work in order to appreciate it, otherwise there's only aestetic pleasure you can get. Then again sensuality seems to be part of this man's game.
